On a personal note. I haven't been on very much lately, it is good to see all the wonderful art everyone is making. I have been mostly painting on slate for a shop in Pigeon Forge in the Smoky Mtns., along with my sign making. It isn't exactly fine art, but it is an interesting break from making signs. My little girl is growing like a weed, almost out of 3rd grade already. She does great in school, always on the honor roll. I have a little boy now, a little over 8 months, he's a sweety.

My work has been interrupted lately by terrible headaches and my BP has been sky high. I spent the weekend in the hospital. They ran all kinds of tests, and while they didn't exactly find the reason for the spike in BP, they did find a mass on my left kidney, which has a 90% chance of being cancer. The good news is that it should be a relatively easy operation, as operations go. The bad news...it's still an operation, lol, with down time and recovery time that I don't see how I'm gonna do it. My time is already so filled now as it is. But I am not going to complain, it could be much, much worse. As long as nothing goes wrong, I should still be able to see my kids grow up and that is the most important thing.

Once again, it is good to see all your work, and if I dont get to comment on them all, I do look at each and every one of your submissions. :)

Well, today is my Birthday. Gahhhh, lol. It also happens to be family reunion time, so there will probably be about 75 or 100 people tell me how old I'm gettin, lol. But they are good people, so it should be fun.

Spring is fast approaching. How time flies when you get older, lol. I severely injured my back a few weeks ago, and was laid up for some time, but now things seem to be getting back on track. My jobs have been piling up, but I would rather have too much work than not enough. The quality of my work has really been impressing people lately, so even though I am not very fast, they are willing to wait for quality work. I have owned my own sign busines for 10 years, and yet it never fails to amaze me how many businesses put off to the very last minute to order a sign, or fail to budget enough money for the sign work, and they think you can just throw something together in a day for very little money.

A couple years ago, we had an influx of what I call "fly by night" sign companies, people with little or no skill, but enough money to buy the latest "sign program" and vinyl equipment. They managed to flood the market with poorly made and cheap signs, taking business from the real sign companies, but where are they now? Gone with the wind. Fortunately, it may have taught people a good lesson. They seem to appreciate quality work a little more now.

Ok, enough with the rants. hope everyone has a great Spring and start to the new year.

Well, fall is nearly here and it's still a 100 degrees, lol. Nothing much happening, except work and more work. Just thought I would change my journal and add the new club I joined, Inkslingers. Check it out, some pretty cool stuff.

The PDF I was illustrating, "TREES OF FANTASY", written by Robert Goodfellow for www.bardsandsages.com/ can be found at www.rpgnow.com/product_info.ph…

This is an OGL product, which means it's compatable with any RPG product that uses the d20 game mechanic. It's non-setting specific, so it can be used in pretty much any campaign world. There are 23 illustrations, all in full color and done by hand in acrylic on hardboard, then scanned and converted to digital files with no manipulation.

I would like to thank Julie  :iconakyna: for the opportunity to be involved in her Trees Of Fantasy project.

Thanks for visiting my page.

This journal is dedicated to my dog Lady. She was part Lab, part Chow and I have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She just died at 16 years old, which is pretty old for a dog, I guess. I have been expecting this for awhile, as she was finally showing signs of ageing, but I was surprised at how much it hurt. It feels like the world just got a little bit emptier. And to add to it, my little girl, 5 years old, had gotten very attached to Lady as well. She took it pretty hard. Children are resilient, of course, but she is a deep thinker, and I know it has changed the way she looks at the world.

Anyway, I probably won't leave this up long, it's mostly just for my benefit. Sometimes it helps to write things down, which I haven't really done in a long time.

To Lady, a good dog, smart and loving.....you will be missed....

I have also been chosen as a concept artist for an online RPG called Pirates vs. Ninjas. This is my first try at game developing, and I am excited about this as well. Right now I am primarily involved in making a world map for the game.

I want to thank my friends and watchers for your continued support and hope your summer is going well.

Peace and Happiness,

Larkin

Just wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday season and a wonderful New Year. :airborne:
Well, I finally finished my latest drawing. Although when I look at it now, there might be some things I need to work on...*sigh*...one of these days I'm gonna be happy with my art work...but I doubt it...I am happy while I'm making the art, so that's the main thing I guess...
This small rant, if you will, is somewhat inspired by some words in a journal of an artist that left a comment on a daily deviation. It was a comment that I agreed with and here is the link to the artist if you would like to read it for yourself twilightofferings She has a very nice gallery as well.

Now, I am not one to put down anyone else's artwork and that isn't what I am doing here. No one is probably gonna read this anyway, lol. But there seems to be a lot of people confusing technique for techniques sake with art. There is nothing wrong with being technically gifted and using that in your artistic statements, however you choose to do it. But copying photos exactly as they appear, no matter how well it is done, seems to me to be a waste of time and skill. Especially when the photos haven't been taken by the artist. There is a big difference between using a photo as a referece point and in copying it dot for dot. As twilightofferings says, where is the creativity in that? And if it is a photo not taken by the artist, then its pure plagiarism, plain and simple. Even stock photos are meant to be used as references, as starting points for the artists own vision. True art, to me at least, has a well-rounded combination of technique, design, creativity and heart. Something that makes that work original, belonging to its creator and no one else. No matter how well rendered technically, a copy of someone elses work or photo will always be just that...a copy. Of course that's just my :twocents: :)
Well, I have finally finished my contract which has eaten up all my time for the last 6 weeks. Can't complain, tho, the work is always needed, lol. I see you guys have been busily submitting work, now Ive gotta get caught up in looking at all your nice work. Hope you are all doing well.... :blowkiss:
Oh, yeah, with the help of my cousin, I built a new comp and let me tell you it rocks, lol.
I just got a contract to do the graphics and signs for 13 beauty supply stores, and they have to be done by the end of August, so I'm gonna be hopping from now until then, lol. Plus, I am flying to Connecticut thursday and won't be back until next tuesday, so that will make it even tougher. Oh well, can't complain about the work, it's definitely needed. I may be delayed in viewing and commenting on your work, but I will look as often as I can. Looks like my art will have to be put on hold for a bit, too. Oh, I bought a new katana :katana: :D
